The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian denominations in the world, tracing its origins back to the 4th century AD. It is the largest religious group in Ethiopia and has played a significant role in the country's cultural, social, and political history. The church has its own unique liturgical practices, including the use of the Ge'ez language, a liturgical language that is still used today. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is known for its colorful religious ceremonies, distinctive art and architecture, and deep spiritual traditions. It has also faced challenges throughout its history. Despite these challenges, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church remains a vibrant and important part of Ethiopia's religious and cultural heritage.
Mahidere Sibhat Lideta Le-Mariam Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is embarking on a meaningful journey to build a permanent church home that will serve the expanding Orthodox community in Greater Austin and its surrounding areas. This initiative aims to raise funds for creating a sacred space dedicated to worship, prayer, and teaching, as well as to preserve the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. With the unwavering support of our community, this new church will transform into a vibrant hub for Holy Liturgy, feast celebrations, youth education, community events, and service for many generations to come.

Our church offers a variety of sacraments that are central to the Ethiopian Orthodox faith. These rites are an important part of our spiritual life and growth.

  • Baptism - Infant Baptism, Divine Rebirth, Adult Baptism
  • Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It is the door through which one enters the Kingdom of God and becomes a member of the Body of Christ. Boys are baptized on the 40th day; girls on the 80th day after birth, following the tradition of the Church. New converts receive baptism by triple immersion in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit after catechism.
  • Holy Communion
  • Holy Communion is offered during all regular services. It is a means of partaking in the Body and Blood of Christ and a cornerstone of our worship.
  • Holy Matrimony / ቅዱስ ጋብቻ
  • Begin your journey together in the sacred bonds of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. We provide marriage services for couples wishing to join in the holy sacrament of matrimony, with a focus on commitment, faith, and love.

Memorial & Funeral Services

We walk alongside families in their time of grief, offering sacred rites and compassionate support. Our church provides funeral services that honor the deceased and offer comfort to the bereaved. We believe in the resurrection of the dead and the hope of eternal life, and our funeral services reflect these core beliefs. We offer a range of funeral services, including traditional Ethiopian Orthodox rites, as well as more contemporary options to meet the needs of our community. Our clergy are available to provide guidance and support to families during this difficult time, and we strive to create a meaningful and respectful farewell for all who have passed on.
